DEMOCRACY AT ITS PEAK IN EQUATORIAL GUINEA

05/03/08
Malabo, 05-03-2008:CIDGE. –The general, legislative and municipal primary elections have been held by the Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea, PDGE, since the beginning of this week. The elections have triggered a real fever which has created a singular expectation in the national territories, and in particular Malabo, the nation’s capital. Attendance included followers of all ages, sexes and categories.

Since last Monday, members of the government, high officials of the administration, ex officials, officials of the public and private sector, impresarios, businessmen and businesswomen, intellectuals, professionals and even students and housewives, have responded in their respective Geopolitical Zones. An internal campaign, without precedents, of the PDGE, will end with the election of four candidates for the position of Delegate of the House of Representatives as well as for Councilmen and Councilwomen of the Municipalities in all the national territories.

According to the criteria adopted by the PDGE, the four people who are chosen in each of the geopolitical zones that make up the Neighbor Communities or the Town Councils depending on the case, will be the ones running in the last phase of the ballots. They will be running against candidates representing the political opposition and most importantly, they will be running against those that have not adopted the Coalition Agreement with the governing body. However, by rules of the Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea, it is stated that the current internal campaign should be held with certain common rules for all candidates; for example, candidates should present themselves only to voters on behalf of the PDGE. In other words, candidates will abstain from personal allusions both in one’s own favor and against other candidates. Also, the campaign and the votes will not, under any circumstance, be financed or bribed in favor of any candidate from the most affluent candidates to those with the lowest incomes.

Everything leads to the military brother and founding president of the PDGE, Obiang Nguema Mbasogo. He wants to use the criteria as a political thermometer to measure the degree to which the military candidates from his political affiliation are established and the degree of their popularity in their respective territories. The big leaders depend on other factors besides establishment and popularity. They also depend on factors such as obedience, charisma and efficiency.

The results from the PDGE primary that will be known within the next few days are an internal exercise of Democratic discourse toward the consolidation of the electoral system. It is a system that should have common applicable rules. It is also a system where those who are chosen will be able to truly confront their adversaries, who are convinced of their own mobilization capacity.

Today, results can be seen in buildings, walls, streets, avenues, wards, and other corners of the nation’s capital. Results are seen everywhere in the country. The reflection of the fever from the primary is seen in the bosom of the Party of the Masses through an abundance of photos in all sizes of those candidates who wish to walk for the first time in the hemicycle of the National Parliament, repeat the experience or simply take a chance, in case they are lucky.
